NVIDIA Tools Extension SDK (NVTX) is a lightweight instrumentation library that lets you annotate your application with custom markers, ranges, and resource names so NVIDIA profilers—such as Nsight Systems and Nsight Compute—can display them alongside CPU and GPU activity. With NVTX, you can label phases of work, tag threads, CUDA streams, and kernels, assign categories and colors, and attach numeric payloads to help correlate code with timeline events, pinpoint bottlenecks, and quantify performance. The modern NVTX API (v3) offers a header-only C++ interface while retaining compatibility with the classic C API and providing bindings for other languages such as Python. It is cross-platform, imposes negligible overhead when profiling is disabled, and is safe to keep enabled in production builds.
